The self-taught photographer's professional career took off after photographing then-upcoming actor Richard Gere in the late 1970s. In the 1980s, Ritts continued to build his reputation as a celebrity portraitist and worked as well in fashion photography and produced album covers and music videos. One of the common themes of Ritts' work is the nude.
